Boiling mad, I went straight down to the river to find Jim Frazer. He was there in his cabin, lying in the bunk, looking pretty sick.

When I came in he grabbed for a gun hanging on the wall, but he laid it down when he saw who it was.

“Did you get the charts?” he demanded.

“Yes and no,” I said. Then I saw that he had a black eye. “What happened to you?”

Frazer grinned. “Had a little scrap. Nothing much. Heard a noise down in the hold and went down to investigate. Guy jumped on me with all four feet and then got away. He left a few teeth strewn around down there.”

“Did he do anything?”

“Not quite,” said Frazer. “But he was opening the seacocks when I got there. We would have sunk right here at the dock. Somebody don’t want us to go, I guess.”

I told him what had happened to the charts. “But,” I finished, “I’ve got the letters I went after, and I guess we can get plenty of charts up here anyway.”

“Gee!” cried Frazer, swinging down. “He got the charts?” “Yes,” I said. “He got the charts. But they won’t do him any good.”
