In the story On Blazing Wings, the action takes place in Finland, during the Winter War where American pilot David Duane is fighting for Finland.

The Winter War was a military conflict between the Soviet Union and Finland. It began with a Soviet offensive on 30 November 1939—three months after the start of World War II and the Soviet invasion of Poland—and ended on 13 March 1940 with the Moscow Peace Treaty. The League of Nations deemed the attack illegal and expelled the Soviet Union on 14 December 1939.

In the story All Frontiers Are Jealous, the action takes place in Sudan, which is located in northeast Africa and is roughly twenty-five percent the size of America. Sudan is bordered by Egypt and Uganda and the Uganda Railway is one of the railways that is connected to Sudan. The story behind the creation of this transportation link was not only courageous, but at times, deadly. 

In the story, Destiny's Drum, the action takes place on the island of Kamling, nestled in the Banda Sea.
