I saw someone else got help with a similar problem, so I thought I'd try.

I read an excellent story in an anthology some time ago, and I want to find it again, but I cannot remember the name or find it by Google.

It is set on a research station orbiting Jupiter. A synthetic kind of human being, something like Homo Centauris or Jovians, has been created to live on Jupiter. There's a guy, I think maybe a cripple, who mentally controls a mindless Jovian body in building a colony for the arrival of more Jovians. At the end his mind leaves his body for good and he becomes a complete Jovian. Other details I remember were that the Jovians drank liquid ammonia, and that ice was used for toolmaking, since it was much stronger in high gravity and pressure than steel, which only existed as a powder.

It might or might not have been by James Blish.

It sounds like Poul Anderson's "Call Me Joe", the story getting the most press for being ripped off by James Cameron for Avatar. It seems to have made a huge number of appearances in print, as listed at http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?55693

Thanks - that was it; I must have read it in The Science Fiction Hall of Fame.

And you've guessed why I was thinking about it (although I've hear that The Word for World is Forest is also a strong contender).
